Why Career services is important by Elizabeth Cole-Walker
Whether you are just checking out this “ISSA thing” you heard about, or a seasoned information security professional with years of membership, Career Services is a vital part of the monthly meeting.
Two years ago, when I relocated to the RTP area, I knew I wanted to continue my path towards an information security career, but was not sure where to begin. After extensive research on the areas’ security environment, the one commonality found was that many people where I wanted to go were members of the Information System Security Association (ISSA). A quick google search revealed information on monthly meetings. After sending a blind email, I was invited to be a guest for my first chapter meeting.
My first session, I was one of five females in attendance. Although Career Services was on the agenda, I entered the central meeting space and never found the career services program. The people I met that night gave me many words of encouragement in my job search.
At the following month’s meeting, I had the confidence to ask about career services. Rob Martin walked me to the meeting and introduced me to Tom Purdy who was the night’s facilitator. Opening remarks included the fact that Mr. Purdy was currently laid off and was entering the job search. I met others like me, some searching for the next progression in their careers, others beginning their careers, and a few looking for new opportunity.
For the next six months, this group became my lifeline and provided me the monthly boost I needed to endure the next month of resumes, applications, interview, and yes, even a few disappointments. The meetings invigorated and empowered me to carry on. Although I was unemployed, I learned that like all information security professional, I still had a lot to offer. As a mentor, I found helping others reinforced my strengths and provided fresh eyes to my job search. ISSA Career Services, networking opportunities, and Info Se Con assisted me in obtaining a fantastic job, doing what I loved.
No matter who you are, mentorship is important. The truth is that we are all both mentors and mentees every day. Career Services is a vital part of growing as a professional and strengthening the talent that will support tomorrows’ information security community. All members should cycle in occasionally to provide their guidance and expertise. It may prove the lifeline you need.
