Java Security War Stories: Microservices

June 18, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Java platform is a prime candidate for building microservices. It offers a wide variety of frameworks to accelerate the development of microservices and continues to evolve in support of container deployment. Many developers in the Java community have begun rearchitecting their monolith applications into microservices architectures. Such a journey, particularly as it relates to security, is not without its challenges.

Of greatest security significance with respect to the migration towards microservices is the increased attack surface. Assumptions about callers of our API within the context of a monolith may no longer apply in the context of a microservice. As a result, previously inert or otherwise non-exploitable vulnerabilities have become exploitable.

Participants of this talk will hear about real life security war stories experienced by Java developers as a result of the microservices journey. Along the way, participants will learn about SQL Injection, ReDoS, JSON Pointer Injection, Unsafe Deserialization and more. Learn from the experiences of others… for “a pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood” (General George S. Patton).

Eric Sheridan has 15+ years of experience helping development teams write more secure applications. Being an entrepreneur at heart, Eric has either founded or invested in multiple application security companies in the past decade, all of whom are focused on making security easier for developers.
