TITLE: Getting Ready for Passwordless Authentication with FIDO2
ABSTRACT: The field of computing invented passwords in the middle of the last century. We continue to use them as an authentication mechanism even as we end the second decade of the current century and that is a fundamental problem with today’s data protection strategy. FIDO Alliance, an industry-standard group of over 200 companies around the world, standardized its newest protocol – FIDO2 – just last year, and the most dominant platforms – Microsoft Windows, Apple OS-X, Apple iOS, Google Android and all the major browsers – have started shipping products with support for FIDO2 or are imminent in doing so.
This seminar will cover a comprehensive introduction to FIDO2, explaining the differences between the new protocol from the prior two that were standardized a few years ago, and how the newest protocol works. It will walk attendees through the process of how to FIDO2-enable a sample web-application and what steps technologists, project managers and executives must take to start evaluating and integrating FIDO2 within their company/agency, At the end of the session, attendees will have an understanding of FIDO2, its capabilities, requirements, and challenges. Practitioners will walk away with an action plan on how to find resources to learn more, initiate a proof-of-concept with existing open-source solutions, and how to start planning for initial deployments of FIDO2 within their enterprise.
SPEAKER BIO: Arshad Noor is the CTO of StrongKey, a Silicon Valley company focused on data-protection solutions since 2001. He has been working in the IT sector for over 30 years, with the last 20 spent in protecting sensitive data through the use of applied cryptography: strong authentication, encryption, digital signatures, and cryptographic key management. He has created many software components and products within the open-source community published articles in a variety of journals and spoken on the subject of data protection through the use of cryptography in conferences around the world. He is an active member of the FIDO Alliance, attempting to bring the next-generation strong authentication technology to the masses through his company’s open-source FIDO Certified server. He was recently appointed to the HIMSS Cybersecurity, Privacy and Security Committee, as well as invited to participate in the Forbes Technology Council where he hopes to affect change through better communication resources, higher visibility, and peer feedback.
